Telehealth

At first, I was reluctant to do Telehealth Counseling. I thought it would be too impersonal, but as I reflected on it for more than a year I started to realize all the benefits and now look at it as an added service to offer my clients.

I thought…this would be helpful when:

  • There’s a bad winter storm
  • You have a sick child that’s home from school
  • You or I have a cold and want to avoid spreading it
  • You want to avoid bumping into someone you know at my office
  • You have a tight schedule and don't have much time for a session
  • You'd like the office to be a little warmer or cooler than I have it

Now, suddenly we are in the midst of coping with the Coronavirus, COVID 19. We are being asked to practice Social Distancing and to avoid unknowingly transmitting it to our loved ones or getting it ourselves. This current situation thrusted me into making the transition to Telehealth immediately.

I am also expanding my practice to include more areas in Michigan and to several other states that allow interstate Telehealth Therapy. This is also a great asset to people who:

  • Have to travel a lot for their jobs
  • Are college students away from home during the school year
  • People who live in an area where there aren’t many therapists available

So what is Telehealth Counseling exactly? The World Health Organization defines Telehealth as health care services that use telecommunications to deliver health care outside of traditional health-care facilities.

There are two main ways that I hold sessions. The first is by phone and we all know how to do that. The other is through video conference. Both are HIPAA compliant and protect your privacy. I perform video conferencing through the Zoom platform.

All you need is a quiet space, and a computer, laptop, or tablet that has a microphone and camera. Basically, I email you a link to click on at the time of our session and you are let into session with me. I also plan to give my clients who are new to this some extra time during the first session to work out any technical bugs, if necessary.

That's essentially it!
I am certified to perform Telehealth and will verify that your insurance covers it before our first session.
